Zardalu Mango – Bhagalpur’s Fragrant Golden Legacy

Zardalu Mango – Bhagalpur’s Fragrant Golden Legacy

The Mango That Smells Like Home.

There are mangoes. And then there’s Zardalu Aam — the golden queen of Bhagalpur that doesn’t just sit in fruit baskets, it reigns.

Every year, as summer tiptoes in and the soil of Bihar warms up, a sweet perfume rises from Bhagalpur’s mango orchards. That’s Zardalu — ripe, regal, and ready to tell its centuries-old story.

What is Zardalu Aam?

Zardalu, also known as Jardalu, is a GI-tagged variety of mango grown in Bhagalpur, Banka, and Munger districts of Bihar. It’s celebrated for:  Its unmistakable aroma (you’ll know it’s Zardalu before you even see it),  Its dazzling golden-yellow skin, and  A sweet, smooth, fiber-free pulp that melts like nostalgia on your tongue. It usually arrives early in the mango season — around mid-May to June, beating most mangoes to market.

Mango of the Royals

Back in the day, Zardalu was exclusive to zamindars and royals of Anga and Bengal.
This mango wasn’t just a fruit — it was a diplomatic gift, a harvest celebration, a token of status.
Even today, many believe its name comes from Persian, where Zard means yellow — a nod to both its color and possible exotic roots.

GI Tag — More Than Just a Label

In 2018, Zardalu mango earned the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag, officially recognizing it as a unique agro-product of Bihar.
